Around one thirty a.m. Tanner climbed from bed and kissed Sara, who was asleep. On the video baby monitor, Lucas was once again sleeping soundly. After getting in a quick but intense workout in his home gym, Tanner shaved, showered, and left the penthouse. On the way back to the strip club he stopped at an all-night diner for coffee. He grabbed an extra one, as he assumed he would find someone at Johnny R’s who was still awake.

Upon his return to the club he came across Finn Kelly making the rounds outside as a shift change was taking place with the perimeter guards. Tanner had slipped up on two of them and saw Kelly smile when the men realized Tanner was standing behind them.

“Don’t feel bad, lads,” Finn told them. “He snuck up on me once too, and he’s the only one to ever do that.”

“I take it things have stayed quiet?” Tanner asked, as he handed Finn a cup of coffee.

“Yeah, and it worries me. It makes me wonder what Gant is waiting for.”

With the shift change completed, Finn and Tanner went inside and upstairs to the reception area outside Pullo’s office. Inside, Joe and Sammy were sleeping on a pair of sofas. Finn told the three men guarding the door that they could take a break.

“Thanks for the coffee, Tanner. I’ve been getting by on four hours of sleep the past two days.”

“Have you heard anything from that contact you made at the hotel where Gant is staying?”

“I checked in with him and he says that Gant hasn’t left his suite.”

“As soon as he does, I’ll make a move on him. I have a rifle in my car that can reach out and touch him from a mile away. Joe just has to give the word.”

“I hope we get the chance. If we have to fight our way past Gant’s men in that hotel, we’ll lose a lot of people, not to mention the grief we’ll get from the law.”

“I’ve been thinking about that. I’ve come up with a plan I want to run by Joe.”

Finn checked his watch. “He wants me to wake him at five.”

“What time is it now?”

“It’s eight minutes till three.”
